Server Console – Initial Access

In this Lesson

You will

  • Learn about the Server Console
  • Learn how to create the initial Console Super User

Concepts

The Soiree server (SxServer) provides a console which offers six services

  1. A Performance Monitor
This service allows you to inspect the performance characteristics of the server, agents, and queries.
  2. User Provisioning
This service allows you to create users and assign privileges to them.
  3. User Import from CSV
This service allows you to import users into the Soiree security tables.
  4. Mass User Group Assignment
This service allows you to create add or remove security groups to a list of users.
  5. Tenant Maintenance
This service allows you to create and modify tenants.
  6. Manage Security Groups
This service allows you to create and modify security groups.

The details of each service will be discussed in future lessons. In this lesson you learn how to gain access to the console.

Server Console Secured Access

The server console is a Soiree solution delivered with SxServer. Access to the solution is controlled through the use of Soiree security services which will be described in a future lesson. In this lesson we will simply take you through the steps that allow you to gain access to the server console.

The Derby database you installed for these lessons contains the Soiree system tables – some of which are the user security tables. The tables currently contain no rows which means there is no user capable of accessing the server console.

You need to create a user with sufficient privileges to access the console. There is only one small problem: the services needed for creating a user are provided by the console.
[ ah, the old catch-22! ]

Creating the console super user

Soiree provides a tool for creating the initial user capable of accessing the server console.

  1. Ensure the Derby database is started
  2. Start SxServer

  3. Click on the down arrow portion of the Server Console button.

  4. Select Install Console Super User from the menu

  5. Enter the values needed to create the initial user and press OK to create the user.

You are only allowed to create the initial super user. If the security tables already contain a user capable of provisioning users then you will not be allowed to create another super user. If you attempt to do so you will receive the following message:

Starting the server console

  1. Click on the down arrow portion of the Server Console button.

  2. Select the option to connect to the local server

  3. Enter tenant 0 and the super user credentials

  4. The server console menu will be displayed.

[so, it appears you now have the keys to the kingdom…]

That’s all for this lesson.
